Description

Transnational surrogacy – the creation of babies across borders – has become big business. Globalization, reproductive technologies, new family formations and rising infertility are combining to produce a 'quiet revolution' in social and medical ethics and the nature of parenthood. Whereas much of the current scholarship has focused on the US and India, this groundbreaking anthology offers a far wider perspective.Featuring contributions from over thirty activists and scholars from a range of countries and disciplines, this collection offers the first genuinely international study of transnational surrogacy. Its innovative bottom-up approach, rooted in feminist perspectives, gives due prominence to the voices of those most affected by the global surrogacy chain, namely the surrogate mothers, donors, prospective parents and the children themselves. Through case studies ranging from Israel to Mexico, the book outlines the forces that are driving the growth of transnational surrogacy, as well as its implications for feminism, human rights, motherhood and masculinity.

"Babies for Sale?", edited by Miranda Davies, is an exceptional book that looks into a variety of conversations and debates around surrogacy. From the clear, concise and well-researched introduction written by Ms. Davies to the various chapters written by legal scholars, academics and activists, readers are taken on a highly readable deep-dive. Topics include everything from debating whether gestational surrogacy (where the baby is biologically unrelated to the surrogate) is safe to examining issues around the perils of how some children born through cross-border surrogacy arrangements are deemed stateless, the gaps in public knowledge around international surrogacy and mapping the various feminist views around the practice. There are also chapters that specifically look at the surrogacy laws and situations in countries like Greece, India, Mexico and Nepal. The important --and controversial -- debates over possible international regulation is also outlined and examined with precision and a forensic eye.Ms. Davies does not take a particular view on the subject overall but instead allows a variety of voices to debate the subject in various chapters so that readers can draw their own opinions and conclusions. Swedish feminists discuss their reasons for being against surrogacy while another chapter looks at genetic technologies as it affects both indigenous women and women of color. The book is comprehensive and is an incredibly valuable resource for anyone who wants to look beyond the (often incorrect) headlines about surrogacy in the global space.
