Leather and steel, very sharp tree gaffs for thick bark. May need to use extra padding for comfort ( I use velcro wrap-around knee braces. ) More money, but these are U.S.A. quality, not dangerously cheap imports. They look and feel like the design hasn't been updated in 100 years. They feel quality don't get me wrong, but after adjusting and readjusting to make sure they were right, and steady climbing for 2 weeks I couldn't take it anymore. I traded them in and got Notch gecko climbers and am so much more comfortable up a treeProduct difficult to used unless your in good physical condition.I like how they have no Velcro but wish I got the bolts to mine for the sleeve to go on the unit.Very easy to put on get off light could use more padding at shins otherwise great do the job when I need them. Klein tools good job ??To be fair, these are the only climbers I have ever used, so I can't make a comparative evaluation. That said, they certainly get the job done. The spikes are sharp and it takes no effort to jam them deep into the tree trunk. They are easy to put on, and they fit snuggly. And they seem to be made of quality material. The only thing that bothered me is the lack of padding at the top. The inside has a wide strap, but it's stiff leather, so it tends to rub. The outside is just a slender strap with no padding at all, nothing to keep the top and bottom of the buckle from rubbing into your leg. Ok, I didn't get any welts or bruises, but my legs were definitely sore. I took down a 60 foot Scotch Pine that had died. Lots of large limbs. I did three sessions, each one about two to three hours long. The spikes punched into the tree easily, and I always felt like I had a very secure footing. So, if these climbers had a little padding, I would have given them 5 stars plus.I took a while to adjust them properly to fit me. But once their on I felt really secure. I am a first time tree climber and they could use a little more padding.Pros:The straps made this much easier to put on than cheaper versions and the leather pads were surprisingly comfortable.Cons:The long spikes and placement made it like trying to climb a tree using sharpened 4” high heeled shoes. These are replaceable for a cost but a bad choice to have as what comes with them. They are extremely difficult to impossible to use as is even on redwood with deep bark.By the look of the hardware, these climbers should do the job but so far untried. The screws that attach the extension pieces don't fasten. I called tech support four times over two weeks and was told each time someone would get back to me by end of day. Still waiting.Takes a bit to get the hang of using them, but great product, they dig in so no slipping. Biggest obstacle was me.The screws to assemble and adjust the upper and lower part are to light and it is very hard to tighten them, otherwise overal quality very good. For the price, this thing has no padding and is pretty heavy. The only reason j got them is because they are the only spikes available in Canada via AmazonVery nice.
