I've been looking for some less-expensive/high-durability trim tools for a while and I know that I might have to settle for the desired material and then sharpen it myself. I have a carborundum whetstone that should be able to handle anything that I might come across so long as it doesn't have a mohs hardness of greater than 9 (the whetstone having a mohs hardness of 9.17). Tungsten steel should have a mohs hardness of significantly less than tungsten carbide (mohs of 9), so it should be easy to test if this is really tungsten steel, but I'm struggling to find an edge with these tools that competes with a German kitchen knife (this isn't necessarily a complaint about the material, however I want to be thorough). If you want two pretty decently hard, potentially (you will need to do the work) sharp trim tools (the third tool with the teardrop shape is useless unless you have the patience to make it sharp with a rounded diamond file, otherwise it is very dull) then this is the set to buy. Just keep in mind that you will need a whetstone at the very least, and for best results a carborundum whetstone and/or diamond files. You will need to create an edge from scratch on each piece you intend to use. Full disclosure: I eventually intend on taking the 'blade' portions of the tools with flat edges and attaching them to the end of screwdriver-style grout-scrapers that use locking screws to hold bits in place. That handle is going to be much more functional and as long as you can make a decent edge on the steel, you should be set. My biggest complaint about these tools is that the post attached to the handles on each of the tools is off-kilter, so each of them is just a little bit wonky, which leads me to wanting to affix them to other handles. The blades are attached to the current handles via swaging the metal of the handle that passes through the trim bit outwards so the trim bit cannot be moved or removed (this is a positive thing, it has been done very well so the bit is very secure on the end of the handle), so I'll need to pinch in the material holding them on with pliers to be able to swap them to something more manageable.Ultimately I *would* buy these again, not because I think they are particularly good as is, but because I know I can modify or cannibalize them to make reliable tools for myself and other people in my studio.If the seller is reading this: if you can find a way to sell very basic, inexpensive tungsten carbide or (actual) tungsten steel trim tools on this platform I personally know 50+ people who would want to make that purchase. Even if the tools needed to be sharpened by the user. Furthermore, if you are able to sell just the carbide (or tungsten steel) blade that can then be attached to another device that would be the best possible thing (save you money on shipping, allow people to pick what they use). For reference: Bahco makes great carbide scraper blades, but for those of us who want to use them for ceramics we just need a slightly larger/longer blade to make room for trimmed material to move away from the pots. Additionally trimming leather-hard pots is much lower impact than scraping grout, so the risk of shattering or chipping is monumentally lower.
